Your questions, answered
What is the ZO Skin Health 3-Step Peel?
It is a professional treatment combining exfoliation, a retinol cream step and hydrating aftercare. It is designed to improve the appearance of skin tone, texture and smoothness. Results vary.
What are the three steps?
Step one is the peel solution, containing salicylic, trichloroacetic and lactic acids. Step two is Retinol Crème Complex. Step three is Hydrating Crème to support comfort during recovery. Your practitioner provides your individual instructions.
Which concerns can be assessed?
Your consultation can address uneven tone, sun damage, fine lines, rough texture, visible pores and acne-related concerns. Assessment determines whether this peel or an alternative is appropriate.
How long does the treatment take?
The peel procedure takes approximately 30 minutes. Allow additional time for assessment, preparation and aftercare discussion.
Do I need to prepare my skin?
A supervised skin-conditioning programme is generally recommended for at least 4–6 weeks. Some skin types or pigmentation concerns may require longer preparation. Your practitioner selects the products and schedule.
What should I avoid before my peel?
Your practitioner may advise pausing retinol, retinoids and irritating active skincare 3–4 days beforehand, and avoiding waxing, depilatories, electrolysis or laser hair removal for 5–7 days. Previously treated skin must be fully healed. Do not change prescribed treatment without your clinician’s advice.
Who should not have this peel?
This peel is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with salicylate allergy, active cold sores or warts, wounded or sunburned skin, or a history of radiation treatment in the area. Disclose medical conditions, medicines and recent procedures for assessment.
What if I have a history of cold sores?
Tell your practitioner before booking. Preventive antiviral treatment may be needed and must be arranged with your prescribing clinician. Active cold sores mean the peel should be postponed.
When does peeling start and how long does recovery take?
Peeling commonly starts around days 2–3. Allow roughly 5–7 days for visible recovery, although peeling and sensitivity can last longer. Recovery timelines vary, so your practitioner will advise based on your response.
What reactions and risks should I expect?
Redness, dryness, itching, stinging, mild swelling and flaking may occur. Skin may temporarily look darker. Pigment changes, infection and scarring are also possible. Contact your practitioner for severe, worsening or unexpected symptoms.
When can I wash my face?
Wait at least five hours, preferably until the following morning, before washing your face. Follow your written plan and use gentle cleansing without rubbing or directing shower water onto the treated skin.
Which products should I use afterwards?
Follow the prescribed post-peel plan for Retinol Crème Complex and Hydrating Crème. Other retinoids, exfoliating acids, benzoyl peroxide and potentially irritating products should wait until healing and practitioner clearance. Do not substitute products yourself.
Can I pick peeling skin or exercise?
Do not pick, pull, scratch or rub peeling skin. Avoid strenuous exercise, sweating, facials and hair-removal or device treatments until healed. Ask the clinic when it is appropriate to resume your activities.
How should I protect my skin from the sun?
Avoid direct sunlight for at least 7–10 days and use shade and protective clothing during recovery. Follow your practitioner’s advice on when to begin sunscreen and restart your usual skincare.
How often can the peel be repeated?
Repeat sessions may be considered at 3–4 week intervals when appropriate, with maintenance around 2–3 times yearly. This is not a fixed recommendation for everyone; healing, suitability and goals guide your plan.
